Consideracions: Ashes of time està inspirada pels personatges de la novel·la de Louis Cha, The Eagle Shooting Heroes. Nova versió de la pel·lícula més ambiciosa i fins ara més desconeguda de Wong Kar Wai, rodada el 1994 (paral·lela a la que el va llançar internacionalment “Chunking Express” –rodada, de fet, durant la Post-producció d’ Ashes... -). Per aquesta definitiva versió Wong Kar Wai ha tornat a rodar escenes (gran part dels negatius originals es trobaven el molt mal estat o directament perduts), ha replantejat la estructura de l’historia, ha afegit efectes especials i una nova banda sonora.

Crítica: “Només he tractat de fer la pel·lícula que es suposava tenia que haver estat ,amb les seves virtuts, si en té alguna, tant com amb el seus defectes” (Wong Kar Wai). Enfrontar-se a una cinta que te més de quinze anys,no deu ser fàcil..., més si, com es el cas, part dels negatius han passat a millor vida... i les possibilitats que ofereix la tecnologia d’avui en dia son tan grans.
Les temptacions, per un creador, han de ser enormes: Ha de realitzar l'obre perfecte, incorporant el bagatge que donen 15 anys més d’experiència?; S’ha de ser el més arqueològicament fidel al original com sigui possible?: Potser la via del mig?. Exemples redux vàlids en tenim uns pocs... però d’obres poc conegudes (a occident) i en perill d’extinció, gairebé ninguna.
La pel·lícula redux que finalment ens arriba pateix, en el meu entendre,d’una narrativa confusa, que exigeix molt (potser massa) a l’espectador occidental, rere una estructura estacional aparentment molt pautada.
Però si aconseguim submergir-nos dins aquest microcosmos ,ens trobem davant d’un film plàsticament impecable,sempre a la recerca dels límits: L’emotivitat del pla, no solsament en busca del preciosisme pur ,si no de la transmissió de l’emoció immediata.
Els rics jocs de llum i ombra afegida a una saturació de colors i tonalitats extremes, que incideixen directament en la potència (sentimental) de l’ imatge.

Sensual, atrevida i trista, aquesta espècie de caleidoscopi dels sofriments de l’ànima que es Ashes of Time redux, ens descobreix en aquest film desigual el geni incipient d’un autor que en el decurs del temps ha estat capaç de endinsar-nos en un univers i en una veu que li son pròpies.
